Appendix B — Common Questions and Misunderstandings

Is this dissociation?

No. Dissociation involves detachment from bodily sensation or emotional experience. NDSR emphasizes embodiment, emotional allowing, and grounding at every stage. If practices feel disconnecting, they should be paused or softened.

Is this a spiritual or religious program?

No. While awareness-based perspectives appear in many contemplative traditions, NDSR is presented in secular, experiential language and does not require any spiritual beliefs.

Does this mean the self doesn’t exist?

NDSR does not make metaphysical claims about the self. It explores how the sense of self functions in experience, particularly in relation to stress.

Can this replace therapy or medical care?

No. This program is not a substitute for psychotherapy, psychiatric care, or medical treatment. It may be used as a complementary approach when appropriate.

What if nothing seems to happen?

Subtlety is expected. The absence of dramatic change does not indicate failure. Familiarity often develops quietly over time.
